Gemmen's Improving Your Home, Improving Your Life. Gemmen's has been a jewel for shoppers in the Hudsonville Area. Al Gemmen, founder, bought a 4,000-square foot store in 1955 that sold mostly plumbing parts with a small sprinkling of hardware. Three years later, he built a 5,000-square foot store with the intention of building up all the core hardware departments into a well-rounded hardware store. By 2000, Gemmen's had grown to 42,000-square feet of retail space. Taking into consideration a basement, warehouse space and some off-site storage, the total capacity is close to 90,000-square feet. The store also grew far beyond the basic mix of hardware. In fact, it has a little bit of everything. Sporting goods and housewares became strong catergories. Gift items such as candles took prominence in one part of the store while another held clothing. Hardware remained strong, with its own niches such as a wide offering of power equipment and grills. The power equipment department includes brands such as Honda, Ariens, Toro, Lawnboy, and Stihl, plus a full service and rental department. Gemmen's continues to grow today's changing market. As fuel costs have risen over the past years, Gemmen's has added St. Croix and United States Stove Company's pellet and corn stoves to our selection of the heating department Gemmen's competes in a sea of big boxes, but remains competitive. By having competitive pricing and providing superior customer service with a wide variety of higher quality products, the employees of Gemmen's continue the dream started by Al Gemmen so many years ago.
